Ultimate Guide to Skin Perfecting Foods

So we know that moisturizers are good for our skin. They get rid of dry patches, banish bumpy bits and make us soft, like babies, but more often than not we think about moisturizers being on the outside, something we apply directly to the area that needs it. 

We don’t think about those moisturizers coming from the inside. Let me enlighten you with a little bit of info I recently learnt…. Our skin is the largest organ in the body. It is also the barrier between us and the outside world. 

It is responsible for excreting toxins, through sweat, helping regulate temperature, it is also the organ most receptive to touch and sensation. In my opinion, we don’t give it enough credit. 

When things are going wrong in the bod; if we are run down, lacking minerals, eating badly, usually the skin will indicate it. It’s no coincidence that healthy eaters have such glowy skin. 

We need not look only to the products that line the shelves of every beauty department and chemist for the answers to dewy skin. We can eat our way of having good skin too! Now, I’m not saying good products aren’t a must. 

They certainly are important! I am a big fan of the products at Pai Skincare. They made wonderful organic moisturizers, cleansers and provided me with my daily dose of rosehip oil but the food is equally important too. 

So I am going to share a list of my top ‘skin-loving’ foods that keep me looking fresh-faced every day.*


Alpha-tocopherol is abundant in almonds and is a major source of vitamin E, which is an important vitamin needed by your skin. Vitamin E is frequently labeled as a skin food because it ensures the body keeps making ‘skin-plumping’ collagen and prevents dryness, fine lines and wrinkles.


These beauties are packed full of the healthy omega 3 fats that plump up the skin and keep it glowing. They are also a good source of vitamin E, another powerful antioxidant which neutralises free radicals (which age the skin).

Chia Seeds

Chia seeds have become all the range recently. They too are packed with omega-3s fatty acid,  benefiting the skin by helping to strengthen cell membranes’ barriers that allow water and nutrients in while keeping toxins out. 

They are often served soaked as ‘puddings’, which I dislike, as they have a texture a little like frogspawn. I like to add them to smoothies and cereal.

Sweet Potato

They contain high levels of beta-carotene, which  combats the free radicals which result in skin ageing. They are also high in calcium, folate and potassium and despite their sweet taste, have a low glycemic index.

So they help balance blood sugar levels and curb cravings for naughty skin-aging sugar. They are also very versatile and can be used in sweet puddings and smoothies as well as savoury. Like in my Filthy Sexy Healthy Chocolate Shake


It is thought to preserve skin-firming collagen because it is rich in isoflavones, calcium and magnesium, however it is important to eat only good quality, non GM tofu, to get the beneficial minerals. 

Its high protein content also makes it ideal for facial masks, try this by blending silken tofu to a cream and mixing with oatmeal and avocado. Yes it sounds rather like a questionable breakfast smoothie, but it is actually a highly moisturising face mask. Just apply, leave for 10 minutes and wash off.

Just a quick note: There are times when the odd spot appears (for everyone, even healthy bunnies) so don’t be hard on yourself (or hide in a paper bag) just get back to these top 5 foods.
